The Frequent Flyer

The Apple Turnover

Even from the beginning, Ella has made it abundantly clear that she does not care to go on her stomach. After giving the matter quite a lot of considered thought today, though, she apparently managed to develop a strategy to avoid the dreaded tummy-time altogether. When I stuck her in the crib this evening on her stomach for a few more minutes of play before bedtime, she stretched out her legs very matter-of-factly and flipped herself over -- and then shot me a delighted "Nanny nanny boo-boo" smile to boot. I guess tummy time will now have to be closely supervised to make sure it's actually spent on her tummy.

The Ice Jam

One of the first signs of spring around here is that the thick ice on the Red River begins to melt and fracture. This causes the entire surface of the river to be covered in broken and jagged spires of blue ice. If you're wondering what that might sound like, here's a recording of the dispersion of sound waves in ice sheets.

Sir Talksalot

This is the card I had intended to post for Thomas' birthday, which I just found hiding under a pile of dusty files. So Happy Birthday again, Mr. Tom.

The Birthday Boy

Shiloh's birthday isn't for a few more days, but we decided to go ahead and celebrate it yesterday. These are a few snapshots of the do.

Shiloh very much enjoyed his presents (a whole raft of books). Thanks to everyone!

Spoiled Rotten

The Northern Scum

I hear the distant thunder-hum, Maryland!
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum, Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! She burns! She'll come! She'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

It would seem that Maryland has decided to secede from the South and join the "Northern scum"
, as lawmakers recently petitioned to move from the Southern Region of the Council of State Governments to the Eastern Region.

Am I the only one surprised to learn that Maryland was ever considered a "Southern" state to begin with?

The Slam Dunker

Here's a painfully belated Happy Birthday to "Tornado Tom". How was your day?

This One's for Anna...

Home Sheep Home

In one of my late-night internet rambles, I ran across the shockwave game, "Home Sheep Home" and liked it. In fact, I liked it so much that I've made it available for a limited time on the Confederate Canuck blog. To play, scroll down to the bottom of the page, or click here.

The Sleeping Beauty

The Beloved Strikes Again

So impressed was she (and everyone else) with her recent foray into photography, the Beloved decided to try her hand at it again yesterday.

The Exersaucer

Here's a picture of Ella playing in her exersaucer for the first time.

Sweet Dreams

The Beloved took these pictures of Ella in her crib this morning. The Beloved is one of those annoying people that is naturally good at everything they do, and this apparently even extends to photography.

The Snowman

As warm weather has graced these lands the last couple of days (34°F! HEAT WAVE!!), our dry powdery white stuff turned quickly into wet sticky white stuff. Which, as we all know, is conducive to making snowmen!

Shiloh and I took advantage of the opportunity spent the afternoon outside, building my second and third Canadian snowmen (they were also my third and fourth ever; we Confederates don't get much snow).

Unfortunately, today was the one day that I elected to leave the camera at home. So for the time being, imagine a large, jovial-looking snowman with a goofy grin and a carrot nose standing in the yard by the shop. Nice, eh?

The Sleeper

Here's a picture I took this morning of Ella wearing the fancy new "My Daddy Loves Me" sleeper which she received in the mail last month from the Aunt Farm.

[Note: You may have noticed that my pictures of Ella have recently become increasingly blurry. This is because Ella has recently become increasingly blurry.]

The Anthem

You may have noticed a bit of a tiff in the news recently about the storm of controversy surrounding the proposed changes to the Canadian anthem. Or not. The tempest came about when the Conservatives (or specifically, Senator Nancy Ruth) decided that the lyrics of O Canada needed to be politically-corrected.

The lyrics to the first verse are, of course:

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.

These well-meaning liberals (or, conservatives in Canuck-speak) reasoned that instead of singing, "True patriot love in all thy sons command", Canadians should be singing something more gender-neutral. (Interestingly, their solution was to revert the lyrics back to the original 1908 version, which reads, "Thou doust us all command.")

In the ensuing firestorm of bitter debate, a nation of concerned Canadian citizens set down their Tim Horton's coffees and divided themselves into two opposing factions -- those who had absolutely no idea that Canada even has an anthem, and those who don't know the words to it well enough to care.

Yes, my friends, the conservatives apparently forgot one crucial fact: most Canadians don't actually know the words to O Canada.

While the idea of not being able to stand up and sing the song that unites your country of birth seems foreign to the fiercely patriotic Americans (and to basically everyone else on the planet, for that matter), ask the average Canadian to sing O Canada and you'll end up with something that sounds like this:

O Canada! A hmm da ha ha hand! Blue patriot la hmm la da hmm tha man!

Don't believe me? Check YouTube for shots of the proud Canucks singing their anthem at this year's Olympics. You'll see that while some of them know a few words here and there, most are grinning their way apologetically through it and quietly mumbling the words to Happy Birthday.

When met with these observations, the Socialist I'm related to argued her point. "Of course we know it," she objected. "We just don't make a big deal of singing it like you Americans do. That doesn't make us any less patriotic." What she's suggesting, then, is that it isn't ignorance that causes Canucks to blush and grin sheepishly as they stumble through their national song -- it's embarrassment. They're embarrassed that they even have an anthem, and are busily looking over their shoulders to make they aren't offending anyone within earshot with their blatant and inexcusable patriotism. True patriot sons, indeed.

In either case, the Stephen Harper government announced on Friday that there will be no changes to the anthem. So for the time being, at least, the public singing of O Canada! will continue to be met with offended women and blushing Canucks everywhere.

Hat Tip: Mom, for the idear. Thanks Mom!

Been There, Done That, Bought the T-Shirt

Can't get enough of the Confederate Canuck blog? Now you can wear it, too, with the Official Confederate Canuck t-shirt. On sale now!

[Edit: This isn't a joke. You really can go to Wordans.com and purchase a t-shirt like the one above for only $22.36. Really. And it gets even better -- $2 from every shirt go to help feed hungry children... my hungry children.]

Pretty in Pink

I snapped this picture of Ella today. This dark pink track suit has only just recently fit her; she's recently burst out of her 0-3 clothes completely, and will now only fit 3's. I think she looks like she's ready to go jogging.

A View Askew

Do not attempt to adjust your screen. The Confederate Canuck isn't responsible for the waves of motion sickness you are experiencing; it's a dizzying montage of lopsided shots from the Sunday set. Swallow down your vertigo and behold the pristine and frozen majesty of a Manitoba winter -- Katie style.

The Computer Nerd

Shiloh figures he knows how to use the computer well enough to watch Wubbzy videos on YouTube by himself.

The Photographer

This last Sunday morning started off foggy and icy at Bobchi's. The sun made quick work of melting the fog away, but the ice hung on a bit longer. Long enough for me to snap this picture of icy white branches and a clear blue sky.
